Partner Issues
IDL teaches couples to interview each other to develop deeper self-awareness, a sense of being genuinely seen by the other, and dispelling misconceptions about who the other is and why they think, feel, and act as they do. In addition, IDL teaches couples to talk to previously interviewed characters rather than to their persona or waking identity. This is to defuse conflict and access greater objectivity. For example, “Elephant (a previously interviewed character of one’s partner), what do you think about what s/he just said?” Instead of chiming in with your opinion, say, “Tornado, how would you handle this issue if you were ___ (your partner)?”
